If you’re new to netball (or just a bit rusty), figuring out who plays where on the court can feel like a puzzle. But don’t worry - we’ve got you covered. In this beginner-friendly guide, we’ll walk you through the seven netball positions, what each one does, and how they work together to keep the game flowing.
Whether you're thinking of joining a London netball league for the first time, getting back into it after a break, or just curious about the rules, understanding the positions is a great place to start.
Each netball team has seven players on court, and each one has a specific zone they’re allowed to play in. Here’s what they each do:
The Goal Shooter’s job is simple: score goals. They work closely with the Goal Attack and are only allowed in the attacking third and goal circle. Accuracy, quick footwork, and smart positioning are key here.
In our London netball leagues, GS is often a popular pick for those who love the spotlight and can stay calm under pressure!
The GA supports the shooter and can also score goals. They play in the centre third, attacking third, and goal circle. Think of them as the playmaker in the front end - they pass, dodge, and drive towards the goal.
WA is all about feeding the ball into the shooters. They can’t shoot themselves but are crucial in linking the play from the mid-court to the circle. Vision, speed, and great passing make a top-tier Wing Attack.
The Centre is the engine of the team. Allowed in all areas except both goal circles, they take the centre pass and keep the momentum going. This position demands stamina, awareness, and quick decision-making.
Centre is ideal if you want to be involved in every part of the game - a fan favourite in our social netball leagues across London!
WD marks the opposing Wing Attack and helps break down the attacking flow before it reaches the goal circle. Great for players who like to read the game and disrupt play.
GD is the Wing Defence’s defensive partner. They can go into the goal circle and are there to intercept, block shots, and pressure the Goal Attack. Strong footwork and timing are crucial.
The last line of defence. GK stays in the defensive third and goal circle, marking the Goal Shooter and keeping the opposition from scoring. It’s a physical, strategic position - perfect for players who love a challenge.
