When you're looking to join a netball league in London, one of the first decisions you'll make is whether to play indoors or outdoors. Both offer great games, friendly competition, and that unbeatable team buzz - but they do come with different vibes, surfaces, and play styles.

If you’re not sure which one suits you best, don’t worry - we’ve broken it down so you can decide what kind of netball experience you’re after.

🏐 What’s the Difference Between Indoor and Outdoor Netball?

Both versions follow the same rules, positions, and game format, but a few key differences make each one unique.

1. The Playing Surface

  • Indoor Netball:
Usually played on a wooden or synthetic sports hall floor. The surface is smooth, consistent, and more forgiving on the joints - perfect for quick changes of direction and fast footwork.
  • Outdoor Netball:
Played on tarmac, concrete, or purpose-built outdoor courts. Outdoor surfaces can be slightly harder on the body, especially in colder weather, but they have a classic feel that a lot of players love.

In London, many of our outdoor netball leagues take place on well-maintained courts, often with floodlights for evening games.

2. The Weather Factor

  • Indoor:
No surprises here - indoor netball is rain-proof, wind-proof, and winter-friendly. You get the same conditions every week, no matter what’s happening outside.
  • Outdoor:
Outdoor netball in London can be glorious on a sunny evening - but yes, it might get chilly or damp in the winter months. That said, a bit of weather never stops our leagues. Just bring layers and a waterproof!

3. The Game Pace & Feel

  • Indoor:
The pace is often faster due to the smoother surface and lack of wind resistance. It can feel more intense and technical, which some players really enjoy.
  • Outdoor:
Often has a more casual, relaxed vibe - great for social players or those just getting back into the game. It's also brilliant in spring and summer when you're playing under the evening sky.

4. Availability in London

At Playnetball, we run both indoor and outdoor leagues across London - so you’ve got plenty of choice.

  • Popular indoor venues: Clapham Leisure Centre, Highbury Grove School
  • Popular outdoor venues: Kennington Park, Paddington Rec, and Finsbury Leisure Centre

Wherever you are in London, there’s likely a court near you.

⚖️ So… Which One’s Right for You?

If you’re looking for:

  • A weather-proof, consistent game → Go indoor
  • A more social or casual vibe → Try outdoor
  • A soft surface for your knees → Indoor is your friend
  • That classic school netball throwback → Outdoor might just hit the nostalgia spot

Still not sure? Many players try both to see what fits - and love the variety.
